Hello readers,
This has been an unusual couple of weeks for the country in general, and for me personally. I’m sorry I haven’t written in about ten days, but, unusually, I was hospitalized for a staph infection. A lot of people die from these, but not people in their mid-30′s, right? Not to be dramatic, but… THIS is how I got it….
In Minnesota this year, we’ve had wonderfully unseasonable weather. I wouldn’t be surprised if Texas had a year with more snow than we’ve had. Speaking for myself, it’s been awesome! So, I’ve been working on getting into shape, and have been going for brisk walks every sunny day.
My gym shoes gave me a blister, so I decided that for my walk, I was going to wear thong sandals. I started off doing my normal walk, and in about a quarter of a mile I realized that the shoes I was wearing had given me a ton of blisters, and I still had to walk back.
I did my best to keep my shoes on, but when I wasn’t too far from home I took them off and walked the rest of the way barefoot. Yep, that’s how I got a staph infection – from a popped blister on my foot being exposed to the infection somehow. Because I chose to wear those stupid thong sandals over gym shoes… .
So, I went home, washed my feet off really well, put on a ton of antibiotic stuff and a sock on over that. Even though my feet hurt a lot I didn’t think about it much until I was in the bath the next night. I noticed a red line going from my 2nd toe pointing up my leg (towards my heart).
I didn’t remember what red lines meant, just that they weren’t good, and I needed to see a doctor right away. Still, it wasn’t a very long line, and I think I’m a pretty healthy person, so I really expected it to be ok. I went to the emergency room expecting them to tell me that it was no big deal. Instead, they did a ton of tests and hospitalized me immediately. (And I don’t have insurance.)
Right now I think that was the scariest week of my life.
And then, I had a birthday, a test and a job interview right after I got out!
So, that’s why you haven’t heard from me in a little bit!
Update 3/22/12: Went back the day before yesterday for my one week check-up. Unfortunately, the infection hasn’t gone away and she had to put me on even stronger antibiotics. It’s bizarre to feel ok, but to be sick at the same time. She told me that if this doesn’t clear it in ten more days (it’s already been 7) that she’ll bring me to the clinic to get a shot every 3 days. And… if that doesn’t get rid of it, that I might have to be re-admitted.
In the meantime, I’m up, moving around, feeling… mostly normal… (have been this whole time), just constantly a little tired from the slight fevers. But people walk around a little tired all the time!
If only I weren’t so worried about money. So right now, I’m praying (these are just my prayers for myself) for a great fit with the right job, a quick paycheck, and for optimal healing. Sounds pretty good, right?
Thanks for your good wishes,
Rosie
Update 3/28/12
